Nonprofit Board Essentials

An Orientation to the Basic Roles and Responsibilities of Board Service

In response to COVID-19, CEN has moved all of our programs online, offering virtual training opportunities that merge fundamental best practices with crisis management resources and opportunities for peer-to-peer connections and support. Additionally, we're offering special discounts and payment plans to make these offerings increasingly accessible during this challenging time (details below).

"The presentation was well organized and informative.  It gave our board vital information regarding policies, procedures, and how we can create and maintain a healthy board."

- Sharon Clark, Ph.D.

Workshop Description

Many nonprofit board members never receive an orientation to their basic roles and responsibilities. As a result, you have amazing volunteers who want to help but don’t know how and staff that doesn’t understand why their board isn't able to do more. In this workshop, we will go over the basic responsibilities of nonprofit board service to help board leaders understand their commitment and to set appropriate expectations between staff and board. Additionally, we will explore ways for nonprofit board members to maximize support of the organization's mission. This session is also a great program for individuals interested in exploring nonprofit board service and gaining a better understanding of what this commitment means.

Intended Audience: Current board members, nonprofit executives and staff, and anyone wanting to learn more about nonprofit board service

  • Learn what it means to be a nonprofit board member and define your individual commitment

  • Gain a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards

  • Learn how to  move your board beyond basic oversight to governance as leadership
