Keith BonchekAbout Keith:
Keith Bonchek is an extraordinary public speaker who defied all odds. Battling mild Cerebral Palsy, severe hearing loss, and a speech impediment, his educational journey was marked by formidable challenges. Ignoring his doctor's predictions, Keith not only graduated from high school but also pursued college and trade school, eventually becoming a licensed landscape contractor and designer. For over 17 years, he successfully owned and operated his business. However, an unexpected speaking opportunity changed the trajectory of his life. Keith's newfound passion led to the creation of Ability Together, a nonprofit organization committed to raising awareness about the often-overlooked communication needs of people who are Deaf/HOH and individuals with disabilities. Keith passionately engages with medical professionals and their staff, educators, parents, and healthcare students to spread Ability Together’s mission by sharing his inspirational journey, advocating for those who can't, and sprinkling humor into every interaction. Keith Bonchek has served as the Southern California Outreach Coordinator for People First of California, acted as Vice Chairman of the Deaf & Disabled Telecommunication Program, and is currently serving on the Ability Central Advisory Board. Why BRB? I want to better understand the entire workings of an effective board so that I can lay the framework for my own board to be inclusive, productive, and meet the needs of all of our stakeholders. I would also like to be a stronger participant in future boards that I join. |
Juan CuevasAbout Juan:
My name is Juan Cuevas. I was raised in Redwood City where I grew up with both my parents and younger sister. When I was attending middle school, I became part of Friends For Youth. I started with the program as a mentee. When I was attending community college, I decided to become a mentor myself. Recently, wanting to have a greater impact at Friends For Youth, I was asked to be part of the board members. Realizing the impact Friends For Youth had on me, it has always inspired me to help and give back to the program. I currently work as a Human Resource manager. During my years of working, I have had different types of work that have made me appreciate every job someone holds. I started working with my dad at a young age during summers gardening and helping my mom clean an office building. I then worked in retail for a few years. After retail, I worked putting together service vehicles. After that, I worked as a preschool teacher for about six years and did nanny work for about 2 years. Now that I work in HR, my goal is to make sure my co-workers are treated right, because for years I have been on the other side not being informed of the benefits, laws, and was mismanaged. After graduating high school, I attended Foothill College, where I obtained my Associates Degree in Child Development. Not wanting to continue school, I decided to work. In 2016, my life had a waking moment where I had the inspiration to obtain my Bachelors Degree. Eager to make a difference in my life and to prove to myself I could graduate with Honors. I enrolled at Notre Dame De Namur University. While attending the university, I worked full time and attended school part time. Four years later, I graduated with Honors and got my Bachelors Degree in Human Services, Non-profit and Organizational Management. Why BRB? Because as a board member I feel lost since I started. Wanting to do more for the program, I joined as a board member. Now I don't know where to start to make that impact. Second, I would like to learn what is the function of a board, how a board works, structure, and how can board members better serve the program. |

Education is a pillar in Kierra’s life, as it gives her access to worlds and spaces she could only ever dream about. The importance of college and higher education has been instilled in her since she was a child, growing up in Aspire charter schools and benefitting from their “college for certain” mindset. She saw how education “pays off” when she was her school’s sole recipient of a full-tuition scholarship from the Making Waves Foundation. Kierra is determined to go as far as she can in her educational career and encourages her students to dream big and work hard. She refuses to stop at just gaining a "seat at the table", opting to own the table instead. Why BRB? I've always been on the receiving end of non-profit organizations growing up and I've benefitted greatly. I am the person I am today because people in organizations like these believed in me and my abilities. I hope "to pay it forward" and learn all I can so I can provide the support that was lovingly given to me. |
